When I make gravy at Thanksgiving, I scrape up and eat some of the really dark brown dripping globs from the roasting pan. It's quality control, to make sure the gravy will have good flavor.

In one of Beverly Cleary's Ramona and Beezus books, the two sisters go to the store to get their mom a pound of butter. They stop to talk to some neighborhood kids and Ramona, who is maybe 5, gets bored, unwraps the butter and takes a big bite out of it. Freakout ensues.
