Lennie is dismayed by the appearance of mysterious invaders in his neighborhood.

Not the optimal backdrop but caramel cranberry upside down cake unfolded well and looks and smells delicious.

I love my dogs but having a former stray who after almost 7 years is still sure every meal will be her last, and a slightly smaller dog who can’t focus on eating dinner sucks. So Gail is locked in her crate while Lennie hunts under the furniture for the pieces of food that were in his bowl.

Focaccia is delicious but not a success. Recipe from King Arthur’s newest bread book. Bottom is perfect. Top is burnt - did not rise much. My kitchen is very cold so maybe a longer rise, slightly lower cooking temp and avoiding the broiler step will be more successful.

Gail is glad to share - we have had 20.5 in so far (more than we have had all year for the last few years).

Caramel cranberry upside down cake - still cooling before the grand unmolding

Gail and Lennie like baking but Gail is a more attentive helper. She has scored an empty sour cream container and a bowl that once held cake batter. Lennie got covered in flour. Neither got any of the board which they think is a crime.

As you can see - Lennie is excited about the opportunity and ready to find your raccoons.
December 13, 2025 at 3:34 AM
If you need assistance with squirrels as well - he will bring his sidekick Gail who was not trained to hunt raccoons.
December 13, 2025 at 3:33 AM
Lennie volunteers his services - he is a Tennessee Treeing Brindle who was trained to hunt raccoons before being forced to retire because of a congenital heart defect. Patrolling businesses for raccoons that are up to no good is about his speed.

This inspired me to get sushi for me, Lennie and Gail. I think last time Gail ate a piece and Lennie said it was not food for dogs. I got a roll with the fish on the outside this time for him to try.

The NY Times Pumpkin Bundt Cake with Maple Brown Butter Glaze is delicious. Even if you don’t brown the butter in the maple glaze or put roasted pepitas on top. I am bringing to all the work pot lucks this year.

Some smells are good enough to wade through chest high snow.
December 8, 2025 at 1:54 PM
Some smells are good enough to brave the snow. Fire hydrant for reference - in the last 10 days we got 11.5 in, 4 in and the. 6-8 in of snow.
December 8, 2025 at 1:53 PM
She still is but has decided that at 11 or 12, she is too old to climb trees anymore and also too old to get snow on her chest - which is going to be tough because we have 16-18 inches on the ground right now.
December 8, 2025 at 12:00 PM
For those who might have forgotten - she really climbed trees.
December 8, 2025 at 11:54 AM
That is wonderful! We think that Gail is 11 or 12 and although she has given up clinging trees after squirrels, she did climb the neighbor’s 6 ft fence.

I have rescued hunting dogs - when they get going, he bays and she barks - with an occasional howl thrown in. I think he wanted me to let him out to help and she wanted them to go away.
December 7, 2025 at 3:24 PM
Gail would also find that sus. She has been carefully examining every interesting spot in the snow.
December 7, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Also Lennie and Gail helped cook - cake (that went to work), chicken they got to taste, and salad they refused to eat. Also Houston might move to Düsseldorf next year.
December 7, 2025 at 2:44 PM
Gail and Lennie got a foot of snow and Houston got stitches in his leg and a snazzy kid’s sweater.

When Abel (the black boi) was old but not elderly, he used to steal things off the kitchen counter. One morning I came downstairs and he was very wobbly. I wondered if he had a stroke until I walked into the kitchen and saw the remains of a bag from a box of wine on the floor. He was drunk.

I told my son today that when you get older, simple things are exciting. Came home this evening to a pristinely clean driveway because I texted the guy I pay to plow and asked him to clear it because Village had filled the end with ice after 3-4 in more snow fell on the original 12. $35 well spent.

Haven’t shared cooking pictures in a while - crispy rice, Shirazi salad, roasted chicken and rice pudding. Recipes from Good Things by Samin Nosrat. All delicious. All seemed like more work than necessary.
