A student once asked what professors do, if not teaching. I interpreted it as a leading question. Among other answers, one thing I found important to note is, who do you think produced the articles, books, and reports you are being taught in this class? dailytarheel.com/article/univ...
Workload report shows breakdown of time UNC faculty spend teaching, researching
It is not exactly clear what UNC plans to use the faculty workload report for, but some professors are confused about how the data was calculated.

I half-joke, half-seriously say I am generally pro-vice, with gambling, especially sports betting, being a major exception. (The half-joke part is that I am pro-vice. Very serious about my anti-sports betting stance.)

These are all funny to me because it reminds everyone that the government is in control of partisan Republicans

Maybe it's cope, but I wonder if these messages have an effect opposite of what's intended, where it prompts people to ask follow-up questions about the very unpopular administration that they otherwise wouldn't, like how it's Democrats fault when Republicans have a trifecta, etc.

Because Trump is an all aesthetics guy, who doesnt get that doing nakedly obvious bullshit like this instead of actually figuring out a way to end the shutdown wont really work for him the way he thinks it will

SCOOP: At 9:35am on Wednesday, the first morning of the US government shutdown, employees at the Small Business Administration (SBA) received a template from human resources for their suggested “out of office” email. They were advised to blame the Democrats.

Reminds me of the woman in TN a few years back that was initially prosecuted for “deceiving” her probation officer (who didn’t know the law) and told her she could vote, when she couldn’t because of her criminal record. (Case was eventually dropped because prosecution hid evidence IIRC)

That, and I also think sometimes they are sitting on higher chairs so their legs are stretch out more (at least on College Gameday, for example). Regardless of reason, I definitely notice it on TV.

Academic economists forming connections on social media show a bias toward certain races, genders, and elite institutions, say researchers at @mcgill.ca, Sao Paulo School of Economics, and MIT. #econsky www.aeaweb.org/research/cha...

A social media field experiment suggests that gender, race, and university affiliation influence the formation of professional relationships among economists.

My suspicion is that this partly comes from the fact that he's a TV guy, inherently (Trump is too but he never buttons his jacket). Not sure if you've eve noticed but on political & sports tv the guys almost always keep their jackets buttoned. It's weird.
jeremylevine.bsky.social
At least Melania had the sense to copy Michelle Obama!
jeremylevine.bsky.social
Also, because I'm feeling petty: His suit doesn't fit at all. Jacket at least 1 size too short, pant rise about 4 inches too low. Shoes are significantly too light, should be much darker or black. He looks like a child/college student (ironic given the whining about grooming standards).
jeremylevine.bsky.social
Like this. Setting aside substance, it's pleading and desperate, not inspiring. He's just whining about fat troops and if you actually wanted to inspire people to change their behavior, this isn't going to do it. bsky.app/profile/atru...

Hegseth: "It all starts with physical fitness and appearance. If the secretary of war can do regular hard PT, so can every member of our joint force. Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals."
jeremylevine.bsky.social
Also interesting that, for a space that supposedly values leadership a ton, the way he speaks does not convey authority or leader-ly-ness. He does this thing with short, declarative sentences after pausing that he thinks sounds strong but it has the opposite effect IMO--sounds desperate, grasping.

god man this is the most pathetic weak beta male shit I've seen from an American defense secretary in my lifetime.

It’s a remarkable blind spot, I learned while engaging with activists when I wrote my first book. Just a fundamental ignorance to the fact that “the community” *also* means NIMBYs, Moms for Liberty, lynch mobs etc etc
beijingpalmer.bsky.social
there's a tendency in parts of the left to believe that 'community' is the answer to everything but communities are often horrendous!

did not realize that prisonculture's "abolitionism" consists of believing that lynchings would be better if they were conducted at lilith fair

New paper in the Journal of Politics uses data from Berlin to evaluate how renters feel about new development after the implementation of rent control.

Researchers find that rent control results in renters being more willing to accept new construction in their neighborhood + more immigration.

In the 2010s, this country's elites were thrown onto social platforms with everyone else and could finally read what we all think about them and it caused them so much psychic damage that they decided to destroy both the internet and democracy to make sure nothing like it ever happened again.

If this is what it took for you to be pushed into fascism you were probably already there
This predates the social media wars of the late 2010s: One Trump appointee told me that a radicalizing experience was being booted out of the Gawker comments section, way back in the day. But as progressive movements swept through social media, others were tossed off Twitter and Facebook for stepping over a variety of lines, from allegations of harassment to claims of election misinformation. Pandemic era public health rules and fevered enforcement cost others their accounts.

It would be more accurate, but equally stupid, to suggest vocational schools for electricians need to do a better job fostering open debate on contentious issues.

I'm always ready to agree about the value of speech. But this is just the well-meaning version of ppl blaming higher ed for Kirk's murder. His killer was not in a conversation or space shaped by campus actors. Campus cannot fix political violence in America.

A free society is not one in which the government can use its power to silence critical speech. Decent people must oppose this.
