I hope I get my entry form in on time to have a chance to win a trip to 1990 spring training.

The SC pack had an insert to help explain the newfangled data on the back. Heat zones and a lot of sabermetric stats. Bill James looms large.

I never owned any of the Stadium Club cards Topps began to produce (their attempt to reintroduce scarcity). The photos are much better but still with weird crops that felt like you’re looking at guys with a telescope. But here’s a Bagwell a year after his rookie season.

I would have lost a bar bet if you tried to tell me Willie Randolph was a Diamond King. But in retrospect the Dodgers were in transition in ‘90. Post-Hershiser’s peak and before their ROY run with Piazza, Karros, Mondesi.

Cannot tell you how many old cards I have of these guys. Joyner almost won ROY (a guy named McGwire got it). Ruffin was a Topps AS Rookie who never found a better gear. I had pages of plastics of Jioyner. He was a decent player!

This is emblematic of how slipshod these card sets were in the late ‘80s era of mass overproduction. They don’t even bother to show a face. These are the shots a photog would come back with on a developed reel at a newspaper you wouldn’t dare use them. But if you’re Topps/Score and printing money…

FYI the wax packs had 36-year-old sticks of gum and yes my son tried it. I tried to tell him the gum was hard as a rock even back when it was “fresh”.

RIP Les Expos and also Rickey.

You can pinpoint the moment the Topps Co. discovered digital photo illustration tools and went wayyyy too far. The ‘89 set is full of gimmicks like the fog of WAR (see what I did there?).

Got inspired by @medialawprof.bsky.social’s thread to finish opening a grab bag of wax packs I bought a while back.

Also very mad about this.

Since moving away from California my birthdays are always cold and often snowy/icy. Justified it all with a panic buy from my chair’s GS cookie supply. Happy returns to me and to Giants scrapper Tsuyoshi Shinjo (who did not get cookies).

Snow day is a good day to end the WAR ON PROTEIN.

Spent most of today digging us out and then helping several neighbors. Still haven’t tackled the big snowdrift under our bay window (that pile in the pic is probably three feet high). Sore all over. Thank god for Aleve.

But I took my new snowblower out for a spin. I’m a California kid who is proud to have resisted it for 18 years, shoveling proudly even when we got a 3-footer. But it’s time. I turn 51 in a few days and my neighbors need help. It felt good in the chaos to clear driveways for two neighbors in need.

Update from 7:30 pm. Probably have another hour left. I suspect our official totals will be higher because the wind has been a-blowin’ today.

Doing science with my youngest. Snow is up to 11 inches in Central Bethlehem as of 1:55 pm with another 7 hrs or so to go.

@bmoritz99.bsky.social Don’t let anyone tell you America has lost its ability to innovate.

A tradition unlike any other: the pre-storm grocery panic.
