Technically I don't think that's part of CBS News (ie Weiss' sphere), but I'm sure she could exert influence if she wanted
jeremyschulman.bsky.social
Maybe assign a Free Press reporter and editor to report aggressively on CBS, Paramount, and Skydance and give them the freedom to publish without corporate interference
jeremyschulman.bsky.social
The absence of the words "Paramount," "CBS," and "Skydance" from this otherwise good Free Press editorial about Kimmel and the FCC was not a great start...
Jawboning and Jimmy Kimmel
The suspension of his late-night show isn’t a great loss to culture. But the FCC’s coercion undermines our most fundamental values.

No, Dems would have needed to convince 10 Republicans to join them, which would have required the sort of successful negotiation they repeatedly accomplished on other significant legislation during the Biden years—including the Electoral Count Act reform bill. But they didn't even try.
jeremyschulman.bsky.social
I have no idea if any of this is going to work, but any honest assessment of the problem is going to need to include a realization from Weiss et all that "restoring trust" in CBS isn't going to be possible without actually addressing the fallout from the Trump lawsuit/FCC/merger insanity

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

Fair point, but also Trump and Miller have been toying with this for years, so it's a much closer to *real* than, say, the (probably not gonna happen) Diddy pardon

It's not like any of these problems were a giant secret after 2020. This from @davidfrenchjag.bsky.social is from after the GOP won the House back, but still... could have at least tried! Republicans probably weren't thrilled about the possibility of Biden or Harris using the Insurrection Act.

Democrats controlled Congress and the presidency for two years after Donald Trump toyed with invoking the Insurrection Act. They could have made an attempt to reform it, but they chose not to. Just like they chose not to reign in tariff laws and other emergency powers.

which I think is kind of a running joke about the FedSoc/Roberts Court/etc. Anyway, it's fine to criticize the joke, but it's weird that the Times obscured the fact that it was a joke

I'm think she is saying that antisemitism is important enough to her that she is willing to form alliances with people she disagrees with on marriage and abortion rights. And she illustrates it with a joke about how most of the people in the room probably only care about fiscal issues anyway
jeremyschulman.bsky.social
This is kind of a cheap shot. She was obviously kidding—the audience laughed! It's in the middle of her rather noteworthy speech on antisemitism after October 7. There's valuable stuff in that speech and plenty to criticize, too. But this was a self-aware joke, and the self-aware audience laughed.

There's a ton of fascinating and thought-provoking stuff in my boss' magazine story on "soft secession." Here's the part I think I disagree with the most :)

The Dan Goldman tweet this story is based on was incredible irresponsible. You need actual evidence to make allegations like this
jeremyschulman.bsky.social
There is no public evidence that this fire was arson and no public evidence that "MAGA" was at fault if it was arson. And using the passive voice in the headline does not relieve journalists of the obligation to make that clear www.thedailybeast.com/stephen-mill...

Seems a bit weird that a position held by about 2/3 of american jews (israel is committing war crimes against palestinians) can get you fired for antisemitism

Does it seem like Virginia politicians are unusually prone to having extremely bad/embarrassing/bizarre things revealed about them? Or do we just notice it more because of the odd-year thing?
