writing, into the dark again
He’s a cormorant in the black in the black throes of the night ocean, following the currents through the black holes that occur there, the icy slap of kelp liquid and solid against the feathers and he in the dark and mewling mewling sent by the Brutes, become a Brute, he must herald the end of the world and protect against it. His own thoughts are arrayed against him, like a stiff surf against rocks. He never wanted to be here, yet he is here and part of a war he almost doesn’t understand, but who can understand it when down in the wet, in the dark, and the irony that they battle assimilation and yet he must transform so utterly. The way the water is wet and dark and here is his beak and here is his steeple, and see all the people…. His eye and these things belong to him but are not part of him, as if his eye might as well be a leaky barnacle, a creature apart and separate that yet lives upon him and this is not how he expected to eke out his days in the aftermath, this is not the mission he expected when they sent him out to the tidal pools chasing Control, and all of his expertise went into those blank holes in the ground. The holes teeming with life and yet so lifeless and deep, deeper than he’d realized, and if he’d realized would he have ended it then by walking out to sea? Or would he have embraced it easier now, having had the time to ponder it all, under the arc of heaven, not the bottom of the ocean. And the washing swishing heavy sound of his wings in the water as if he’s cleansing himself instead of just trying to survive, the sound is like a tiny torment as his beak cantilevers and the body knows, it knows that this is wrong and that he shouldn’t be trying to flap his wings against water, but he is starting to be the wrong shape, the wrong configuration, and yet still he exists within it and does not die. The mind rebels at this new form even if the cells do not and the world is upside down so he knows he is either at the bottom of the sea or the top of …

The crust is eating the trunk, now it looks like the mould is eating the crust.

A close-up view of Hypomyces rosellus, also known in the U.K. as pink polypore mould is growing on a crust fungus on a fallen tree trunk. The crust fungus forms a thin, pale layer on the wood, while Hypomyces rosellus appears as small, deep pink dots scattered across its pale pink surface. These dark pink structures are the spore-producing parts of the parasitic fungus. The texture of the crust fungus is slightly uneven, and the surrounding wood is aged, with cracks and a rough surface.
