A possible explanation for Melville’s animosity towards canallers, from “Melville: His World and Work” by Andrew Delbanco. There’s no actual evidence as to why Herman didn’t get the canal job, but “struck his prospective employers as flighty or truculent” isn’t the worst guess. 🐋

Melville’s clearly referencing Frankenstein here, right? 🐋🔩

Imagine you’re an old whaleman, just returned from years at sea. All you and your mates want is to have a drink and sleep in a real bed, and instead you encounter Ishmael who makes you all talk about the painting on the wall for an hour. 🐋

It’s generally assumed that “Moby-Dick” has a canonical start date in December 1841, so there’s a good chance that Ishmael has entered the AME Zion church (then on South Second St, three blocks from the water) and the preacher he sees is Frederick Douglass. 🐋

Starting with the same copy I used last time, as its whale-sized proportions (the paper is slighly smaller than letter size, and it weighs nearly 6 pounds) feel appropriate, and I like the illustrations. But even though I’ll mostly be reading at home I may break down and get a smaller copy too. 🐋

Sam creates the night 7 drink, but can’t come up with a name. The waitress/aspiring comedian suggests “The He-Brew” (“because of the coffee”). Guess they don’t know about the beer.

Rochester’s official flag is boring, but the flag the city actually uses (which will probably become the official flag next year) is cool.
