Btw, the big story overhanging all of this is that US government is deadly serious in its stated plans to dominate and control the western hemisphere. Take the threats against Greenland very seriously indeed.

Perhaps the answer is simple: the US has been the agressor in most wars, which puts it at a disadvantage.
The defenders are almost always more intrinsically motivated to fight.
WWII was perhaps the only exception (at least that I know of, but I am not a historian by any measure).
