The burden Rep. McBride carries is an unbearable one. She cannot represent every trans person, every way to be trans, every way for the trans world to relate to the cis world. I’m so grateful she’s there, though, so no one can deny that this struggle is about the dignity of real human beings.

There are many ways to fight, and I learned from my radical organizer dad that it takes all of them. The generosity Rep. McBride showed towards those who are ignorant of her experience and that of millions of other Americans was extraordinary. It isn’t the only way, but it is an essential way.

When it isn’t about politics, when it is about what actually drives the best health outcomes for kids, gender-affirming care is always the answer. If you think more study is needed: so do I. So do trans adults. So fund more study. In the meantime, allow doctors to do what evidence shows works.

There was almost no national coverage of this report, and the legislature did not reconsider their “moratorium.” But the actual evidence was, then as now, very clear. Gender affirming care is good medicine.

Here is the report if you want to read it:

I met her once, and I told her I understand why she focuses on Delaware. But also that every day she stands in that chamber she is in her grace forcing her colleagues to reckon with her humanity, and as great a burden as that is we parents of trans kids are so grateful I run out of words.

It is not much to ask for families to see their doctors. I promise you we and our doctors know our kids better than you do.
