My brother (who was the more rebellious of the two of us) used the "call mom" a couple times when he had snuck out after curfew. As promised, they came and got him. Iirc he wasn't completely unpunished, but it was pretty mild punishment in comparison.

Hell, even something like CVE - you just reserve a number and map it to your algorithm.

"For asymmetrical encryption, use ASM-4983 or ASM-4986, don't use ASM-4977 or ASM-4988". At least those are numbers I can write down and remember.

Imagine you're a security guard monitoring 10,000 cameras, and many of them will even in the normal course of operation be installed and decommed. It ain't easy to notice which ones went dark when they weren't supposed to.
