Red and yellow barbet, showing off wonderful colours. This bird is on the cover of my East African bird book for a good reason! Barbets are woodpecker relatives with spiky feathers.

YES! She was surely a profoundly good person. That’s an example to try to follow.

African wild dog in Tarangire National Park. One of the world’s rarest species, Tanzania has had success reintroducing this amazing predator to its national parks. There is hope for, and to be found in, conservation.

It’s just heart-breaking. I am trying to console myself with the certainty that hers was truly a life well-lived. Still feels like a profound loss. Wonderful you had the chance to meet with her!!

Earth lost a conservationist and scientist like no other, and I am saddened profoundly by this news. Dr. Jane Goodall changed lives and attitudes about conservation and respect for nature wherever she went. A gifted leader in every way.

African grey-billed hornbill having a hoot, #tanzania, August 2025. More than 1000 #bird species to discover there. Especially nice seeing birds doing something cool.

Made me smile when I realized they were doing a kind of synchronized head scratch with their right legs. Parrots make me smile a lot.

Male ostrich having a morning look around, #Serengeti, August 2025. While flightless, they run faster - at need or when courting - than many other bird species fly.

WHAT is it with parrots and feet? They’re so smart but what is with that obsession??
jetkerr.bsky.social
Tango the Rescue Parrot in part of his native habitat. He has lots of personality and loves hanging with his humans. I am not sure why feet drive him into a velociraptor-like frenzy, but it’s weird and freaky being chased slowly by a 120g bird.

African grey hornbill, perched in a relatively green tree in the midst of the #Serengeti dry season. These birds have some serious PERSONALITY!

Black-headed heron perched on a scary thorn in #Serengeti National park, #tanzania. August, 2025. There were so many herons in Serengeti - some recent rains led to lots of standing water. And a lot of happy herons.

#birds #wildlifephotography #nature #safari #africa #nikon
Black headed heron perched above an unusual bit of standing water in Serengeti. Significant dry season spells of rain led to unusual patches of standing water and the herons totally showed up for this. The unusual little wet areas were surrounded by large expanses of dry grassland. I am not sure what the herons were eating. These little wetland patches couldn’t have had fish. Maybe a few frogs, though I did not see them.

I know we keep focusing on Colbert and Kimmel as we should, but we also need to remember there are hundreds of people who work for these shows who also just lost their jobs because of this bullshit, and most of them are probably not millionaires.

Needed: more critical thinking & less politics.

Study: Detecting health disinformation journals.plos.org/plosone/arti...

"People with a high need for cognition [critical thinking] were adept at detecting online disinformation, but those with conservative political affiliations were not."

Never get tired of seeing white-browed coucals. They’re a kind of cuckoo with a long claw on a hind toe. These are some seriously handsome, big birds. Serengeti NP, Aug 2025.

Large numbers of Grey-crowned cranes at Ngorongoro Crater this year. Never seen so many - 200+. Some juveniles too, a lovely sight for this endangered species. The chance to observe social behaviours in this group was wonderful for my students and I.

A grey-crowned crane in flight in Ngorongoro Crater. Never seen so many of this stunning and highly endangered species in a single place. I’d like to think this is a hopeful sign, but risks for this species in Uganda and Kenya and elsewhere remain serious and urgent.
