Jeremy Kerr is a biology professor at the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) where he holds the University Research Chair in Macroecology and Conservation. Kerr is a member of the NSERC Council, including its executive committee, and the past president of the Canadian Society for Ecology and Evolution (CSEE). He is the Chair of NSERC's Committee on Discovery Research and a founding member of its EDI subcommittee. In 2021, Kerr was elected to be a member of Sigma Xi Society and is an elected lifetime Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and of the Royal Society of Biology. .. more

African wild dog in Tarangire National Park. One of the world’s rarest species, Tanzania has had success reintroducing this amazing predator to its national parks. There is hope for, and to be found in, conservation.

Earth lost a conservationist and scientist like no other, and I am saddened profoundly by this news. Dr. Jane Goodall changed lives and attitudes about conservation and respect for nature wherever she went. A gifted leader in every way.

Tango the Rescue Parrot in part of his native habitat. He has lots of personality and loves hanging with his humans. I am not sure why feet drive him into a velociraptor-like frenzy, but it’s weird and freaky being chased slowly by a 120g bird.

Black-headed heron perched on a scary thorn in #Serengeti National park, #tanzania. August, 2025. There were so many herons in Serengeti - some recent rains led to lots of standing water. And a lot of happy herons.

Black headed heron perched above an unusual bit of standing water in Serengeti. Significant dry season spells of rain led to unusual patches of standing water and the herons totally showed up for this. The unusual little wet areas were surrounded by large expanses of dry grassland. I am not sure what the herons were eating. These little wetland patches couldn’t have had fish. Maybe a few frogs, though I did not see them.

The world’s heaviest flier, Kori Bustard, who mostly walks around savannahs munching whatever it can find. Males can be very large indeed, almost 20kg. This fellow was strolling around Ngorongoro Crater, August 2025.

Large numbers of Grey-crowned cranes at Ngorongoro Crater this year. Never seen so many - 200+. Some juveniles too, a lovely sight for this endangered species. The chance to observe social behaviours in this group was wonderful for my students and I.

Black rhino at Mkomazi NP in Tanzania. Each rhino is guarded and monitored 24/7, enabling reintroduction of individuals in protected areas, like Serengeti, in Tanzania. Breeding lineages are monitored precisely over multiple generations.

Main threats include canine distemper (most commonly transmitted from domestic dog population to predators, like these wild dogs) and persecution because of human-wildlife conflict.
