The writing stuff definitely isn't debatable! Your characters are always a delight to read about, and you always have a magnificent way of being able to weave in so much backstory and setting into short stories without it feeling overwhelming.

I think that's just a quintessential part of the queer experience (and even the word queer): different people can find power in different words while others consider it borderline a slur.

I say take power in what works for you and don't police other queer folks in how they use words and self-label.
