Years ago, back before the Munk Debates jumped the shark and were still very small events, I was at one at the ROM b/w Mia Farrow and Rick Hillier (on peacekeeping, I think?). Anyways, Hiller spoke SO disdainfully about how "drive-by PhDs" have no business commenting on military affairs. Same vibes.

Meanwhile, ICE is storming into neighbourhoods that have basketball hoops in the driveways, rounding up anyone on the whole block NOT looking like you, throwing them into unmarked vans and taking them to camps. Legitly, I can't tell any more if this is satire, irony, rage bait, or dog whistles.

CANCELLED!! was included pre-emptively, clearly. To be clear- I've never been a knee jerk hater. I usually enjoy some of what she does... there are always turns of melody & lyrical phrasing that are compelling. I think at this point tho, her machine is like phragmites in the girlhood pop ecosystem.

I don't know about you guys, but today I would much rather mourn the 3000 people who were killed by al Qaeda on 9/11, & the upwards of 4 million people- mostly civilians- who were killed (directly and indirectly) by GWB's ensuing "War on Terror" in the subsequent 20 years. But hey, that's just me.

Two things can be simultaneously true: political violence almost always leads to very bad things, for everyone. And also, the establishment that enabled a malignant bigot to thrive doesn’t get to demand respect or civility for him, especially from the very targets of his hatred.

Apparently a minimum of 20% of new tables at a restaurant patio currently being built need to be accessible to any diner using mobility aids. But only if my place of business hires more than 49 people. Great to have all this super relevant information for my job as a university professor.

Hear me out: a dark academia murder book that opens at a department beginning-of-the-year celebration on a boat (I know a department that does this) and a professor goes overboard. The intrepid department chair must figure out who did it. Everyone is a suspect, including the chair herself.

The Prestige Cartel is real. We also need to talk abt the hiring biases in Canadian Poli Sci depts. There is a tendency to assume Ivy League/US & Oxbridge grad job candidates are inherently “better” applicants, while those from amazing Canadian *programs* are cast onto the NO pile way too quickly.

In poli sci, "the top 20% of departments produced 75% of all faculty and the bottom 50% accounted for less than 5% of all tenure track faculty members at a research university. 49 programs did not have a single graduate placed in a TT position at a PhD-granting department in the past 10 years."
