A week after these findings were released, indicating that the existing coal dust mitigation measures are insufficient, Maryland imposed a new requirement on the facility: to install a windscreen around its rail terminal higher than its coal piles, in order to minimize offsite dust dispersion.

A community-driven study, co-authored by Biostats PhD student Anik Burman and Associate Professor @dattascientist.bsky.social, shows links between air pollution in South Baltimore's Curtis Bay neighborhood and bulldozer activity involving coal at an adjacent open-air facility:
