Great to see medical genome sequencing in Fiji 😊

Good story covering an outbreak in a neonatal department of the local hospital, finding the outbreak was caused a bacteria, Acinetobacter baumannii, resistant to the antibiotic carbapenem.

The training course we funded has enhanced ongoing research on animal health and antimicrobial resistance in Nepal. Scientists at NAHRC now have the tools and knowledge to continue their work and build local sequencing infrastructure!

This training has provided local scientists in Nepal with the skills to conduct sequencing independently and analyze local health threats.
Building sustainable science infrastructure = long-term impact. 🌍

In 2024, JIDCuk helped set up an Oxford Nanopore MinION sequencing facility at NAHRC in Nepal. 🧬
PhD student ‪@nisbetalice.bsky.social‬ from @quadraminstitute.bsky.social trained local scientists to sequence pathogens.
She shared her experience here: www.jidcuk.org/blog

We have helped develop sequencing capacity in Fiji:

✅ First outbreak investigation
✅ Complete genome assemblies
✅ Local researchers in the lead

Led locally, thanks to training by
@quadraminstitute.bsky.social
researchers with support from JIDCuk!

This achievement reflects the power of knowledge-sharing and tailored training. The collaboration is part of ongoing work funded by the JIDCuk Charitable Trust to build local sequencing capacity in low-resource settings.

In just 2 weeks, Fijian scientists, clinicians and researchers went from learning new sequencing techniques to undertaking the first sequencing of samples from a neonatal outbreak using @nanoporetech.com MinION. This was a huge step for local capacity in #AMR surveillance! #JIDCuk

It's amazing to see this article championing diversity, representation and equity through international collaborations published in npj Antimicrobials and Resistance this week!

Scientists in developing countries need to be directly and equitably involved in collaborative research, and the tools currently available for this research need to be made available and adapted to all users.
jidcuk.bsky.social
The burden of infectious diseases is predominantly borne by the developing countries of Africa and Asia, but opportunities to pursue groundbreaking research are limited or unavailable for scientists in resource-restricted regions.

At JIDCuk, we support developing countries’ scientists to research infectious diseases in developing countries.
