i have no cultural insights for the potato chip bag lol. it also raises a lot of logistical Qs like...were the chips purchased at whole foods or from a bodega? did she eat or dump the chips beforehand? did the red envelope get greasy (that seems like a faux pas)? why sour cream and onion?

that being said, the fact it is a common practice overseas doesn't necessarily mean that ethics isn't also an issue. see this story from earlier this year from SCMP about how this practice works in respect to the CCP www.scmp.com/news/china/p...

cultural perception could be a legit factor, though. it is not uncommon to give out red envelopes in a more general manner overseas and it's not explicitly considered bribery. my caveat here is that i'm not clear on greco's own personal background/history.
