Now that society is all ferrocrete and stainless steel there are fewer gaps in the joints. It takes a very smart rat indeed to find these openings. Only a stainless steel rat can be at home in this environment.

Yeah, we lost an 80 lb lab mix a few months ago who was the heart of our pack. We swore we wouldn’t get another big dog but walked past this sweetie at an adoption event and couldn’t keep walking.

I’ve been silent most of my life about children, but every single reason I never had them and never will is on display over the last 24 hours. It’s not because I don’t believe I would be a good father, and my wife would unquestionably be an incredible mother. But I would never be able to set free into this world a human being I felt responsible for. Not the world I’ve been watching them build all my life. There is a better world out there. It’s there. We can see it. There is, it’s been so close we can almost touch it all my life. But only almost. As a child I believed that every time we got close, the terrified and the uncaring pulled it away from us, as a joke. Like Lucy with the football. But as I got older, it became clear that they pull us away from it. Yanking us backward. Because where they are feels safer, and because they selfishly want us to remain with them. There is a better world out there. It’s there. We can see it. There is, it’s been so close we can almost touch it all my life. But only almost. I am an atheist, but I have based my life on love and forgiveness. Because I think that is where the future of humanity lies, if it has a future. I am lucky to have been forgiven for many things I’ve done. I have forgiven those in my life for things you would never believe. At the drop of a hat. At a request. Or without them even acknowledging what they’ve done. I’ve lost track of the number of times people in my life have asked me - crying - to forgive them for some long ago wrong or perceived wrong and responded with “I forgave you for that a long time ago.” My capacity for forgiveness is enormous. But it is not infinite. Forgiveness is hard. It takes a lot of energy. Energy I need for other things. Even Jesus, when asked, did not say that we should forgive infinite times. I don’t have a set number like seventy-seven, and I will continue to work to forgive because I believe that is how the human race moves forward, but there will come a point where my forgiveness reaches an end. There is a better world out there. It’s there. We can see it. There is, it’s been so close we can almost touch it all my life. But only almost. Stop making me have to try to forgive you.
