For a proper novel that I think does an excellent job of using the choose your own adventure format but also telling good stories, I can recommend Life's Lottery by @annodracula.bsky.social which solves several of the format's limitations just by good writing and plotting.

I love that movie. Definitely scarier than it needed to be. And a script from Chris Columbus might explain the through-line to Harry Potter. Great score from Bruce Broughton, too.

As a term, it might have been Butch and Sundance: The Early Years. I don't think I would have come across anything talking about The Magician's Nephew using that term, even though I read it very young.
