So if those specialists and academics start actually seeing the signs of how dangerous this is, things will cool or even see legislative actions start to twist in another direction.

The issue there of course is AI stuff is a lobby unto itself now... so even then it'll be a fight to be heard

The insular way in which modern democracies tend to function mean that think-tanks are typically one of the few groups able to consistently access governments outside of lobbyists. And even the ideologically driven ones tend to try to hire specialists and academics for legitimacy.

Eg. AI bro's going "Hey, what if you used LLM's and algorithmic scans of databases in your welfare systems so we can help you get through those processes faster" REALLY appeals to them, regardless of ideological position.

But that assumes governments understands it, and they really don't

Most governments cut back spending on administration and infrastructure at the exact time that it was necessary to be adaptable and flexible to a rapidly evolving world with social media, smartphones and applications.

So they're all playing catch-up. Things are outdated by two years they roll out.

A lot of ink has been spilled philosophically and academically, but in terms of *policy* AI has been largely embraced by governments because it has been advertised to them as solving problems that still remain after the banking crash of 2008 and the simultaneous cyber boom that occurred
