I took my nephews to the Museum of Flight here in Seattle YESTERDAY and took this photo. I had no idea I’d have a use for it so quickly.
Operation PAPERCLIP Even before Nazi Germany started World War Il in Europe by invading Poland in September 1939, the United States benefited from German-born scientists, the most notable being Albert Einstein. Between 1933 and 1939, the Nazis' political and racial policies prompted two-thirds of Germany's physicists and half of its physical chemists to leave the country. The United States' scientific establishment welcomed many of these individuals and held in high professional regard the many scientists who remained behind. As the war in Europe came to an end, the Allies made plans to recruit many of these experts to assist in the ongoing war with Japan. U.S. officials originally called their plan Operation Overcast and then, for security reasons, changed the name to Operation Paperclip. American personnel interrogated German rocket scientists and initially offered the most highly qualified the option of signing a six-month contract to work in the United States. The scientists, who entered the country secretly without any formal documentation, were prohibited from bringing their families. The families were eventually housed in an old army barracks southeast of Munich. Some of the scientists returned to Germany after their six-month contracts ended. Others chose to take up permanent residence in the United States, and many became U.S. citizens. Many rose to leadership positions in the space program and the aeronautics industry.
