this is the most convoluted just-so explanation of a shift in public opinion I've ever heard of lol. Occam's Razor says thermostatic public opinion did what it always does: Trump did family separation&other cruel stuff so public moved left, border crossings surged under Biden so public moved right.

You're wrong about #2. And the reason this is moving votes is because Democrats are perceived as being on the losing side of 30/70 issues due to their refusal to take clear stances and then move on. The saliency won't go down until Dems have an answer for it. 2022 is easily explainable by Dobbs.
