She found it confusing, and after I had a read to, it was rather obvious that it had been shat out by ChatGPT. Especially when the same author published at least a dozen books around the same time last year. And doesn't exist online apart from their books on various channels. (And also, check out the very similar covers). Now THIS is why we need to read more books by writers of color. They point out the systemic and structural inequalities that need to be addressed. And they often do it much better than I can. "And the Category Is..." is required reading ✊🏽

Here’s an except from it that I think highlights good dialogue, good characterization, and tension‬!
Lilah-Mae takes a step back toward the exit as Vanessa presses forward, her tiny body taut and curvy like a loaded spring. "’Miss Dallas-Fort Worth.'" Seething, Vanessa takes a plodding step toward her, pausing from her furious gesticulating only to make air quotes. "Little Miss holier-than-thou. Miss l’ll wear a bikini to win a pageant but not on TV because I'm afraid the religious guys who jerk off to me will lose respect for me." Lilah-Mae stammers, at a loss for words, shuffling backward as Vanessa advances. The girl's head might be at the level of Lilah-Mae's chest, but a snake doesn't have to be tall to be deadly. All the better to slip unassumingly through the grass and deliver its venom. "You pretend to be better than me, but you are me. You're me with a higher neckline and a crucifix chain. We both want the same thing. At least I'm honest about it."
