What's wild about this is that Free Palestine has been a cause among activist movements on the left for a long time. It's not so surprising that young people who were already activated by anti-racism and anti-colonialism through Black Lives Matter and other movements would see Palestine as they do.

Doubtful. The screenshots that circulated showing that the account was based in Israel a) said it was specifically in Tel Aviv, even though no other X accounts specified cities, and b) said the account had been opened in Israel in July 2008 (suggesting the Bush administration was responsible).
