NEW @ember-energy.org report out today | Renewables now produce more electricity than coal worldwide ⚡️

Renewables produced 5,072 TWh (34.4% share) in the first half of 2025 overtaking coal for the first time which stood at 4,896 TWh (33.1%.)

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright: "Adding more wind and solar to the grid have one guaranteed effect: They make electricity more expensive."

US Energy Information Administration: "Nope that's wrong"

EIA data show that states with more renewables have lower electricity prices.

I know there's a lot going on.

But this really deserves more attention:

"Trump administration ... officials want to decommission and possibly destroy two NASA satellites that monitor greenhouse gases and cost more than $800 million to launch."

Energy Secretary Wright made tens of millions of dollars as the CEO of a fracking company, so he certainly knows that the natural gas he brought to market is the primary cause of the decline of the coal industry.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Fox: "We're announcing today expanded programs to help the American coal industry. We're helping it because for years it has been under assault. It was out of fashion with the chardonnay set in San Francisco, Boulder, and NYC ... coal just makes the world go round."

If India really wants to be seen as a climate leader, its government might want to reconsider today's decision to arrest Sonam Wangchuk, the country's most prominent climate activist.

"Perhaps GOP lawmakers are betting that voters won’t connect the dots and punish them for spiking energy bills... But it would be foolish to assume that rolling blackouts and spiking electricity bills will fail to produce any political backlash."

And about how the Big Beautiful Bill is going to drive electricity prices even higher, in every single state:

Your electricity bill is going to give the price of gas at the pump a run for its money in 2026 as the most politically important election-year number.

Happy Climate Week to those who celebrate.

"Governments say they will cut their own climate-warming pollution, yet they plan to continue producing the fossil fuels that are driving that pollution far beyond what their climate targets would allow."

amen. it takes as long as it takes.
and because it takes so much time/effort (and financial opportunity cost) i've concluded that the only reason to pursue this kind of project is if you cannot imagine NOT doing it.
it starts to exert its own gravity.

(really looking forward to reading your book!)

Love this.
Roger Shattuck's old house is just a couple miles from my own here in rural VT. I drive almost every day past the field where he used a scythe to make hay. A SCYTHE. Dude even won the hand-mowing contest at our county fair. Legend.

Thanks. Hope you enjoy it!

Widespread confusion about natural gas convinced me to, uh, write a book on the subject.

And to devote its first two pages to tackling that confusion head-on.

Most Americans don't think natural gas is a fossil fuel.

Most also don't know that it is primarily *methane.*

That's not an accident.

wrote a book about how grassroots folks in rural Virginia defeated 2 huge energy firms' 600-mile fossil gas pipeline. won some awards but more importantly several friends+family who self-describe as 'not big readers' read the whole. damn. thing.

most importantly, I built this timber frame woodshed:
