Not even political 💩 can get me down as we wait for LCD Soundsystem to take the stage at Queens Knockdown Centre ! So stoked !

On campus today, a red-tailed hawk struck a 2nd story window hard enough to smash it.

It has been rescued. Hopefully it will survive.

Window strikes are the 2nd leading anthropogenic source of mortality for birds, killing up to a billion birds a yr in the 🇺🇸.

There are solutions. Let’s use them.

15 November in Queens and trees still have green leaves. The 2nd “anomalous” year in a row in terms of delayed fall senescence.

But shhh. Let’s not utter the words “climate change”.

This, too, is ornamental wildlife trade. And at a time when ocean acidification is putting shelled molluscs at risk by causing shell dissolution, these ancient animals really don’t need this added threat.

On a morning when everyone is posting their incredible photos of the aurora borealis from all over 🇨🇦 and the 🇺🇸 (which we did not see in NYC), I give you these from this morning…

Our 🦜 attacks my slipper at least once a week - today, inflicting only minor damage to my foot.

🦜s are jerks.

So basically, 0.09 to > 0.1 % of the entire 🇺🇸 population will have been let go from the federal workforce (in addition to all the other job losses) by year’s end. Have I got that right ?

Ok just saw this on instagram, and I’m a bit obsessed.

This is Prospect Park right now.

Immigrants DEFINITELY make our cities, our communities and society so much richer and better.

Never let ‘em say otherwise.

Sometimes, when I am working from home, I get this eerie feeling behind me.

I turn around and this is what I see. He’s just standing there at the doorway.

Watching me.

What a weirdo.

Not the most beautiful gel I’ve ever poured, but some of the most beautiful results.

We have successfully amplified DNA from the putative arthropod pollinators of skunk cabbages.

Sequencing is around the corner and I am stoked !

Yes, one can say “drill, baby, drill”, disincentivise electric vehicles & deregulate carbon emissions.

But one cannot counteract the positive reinforcement of going > 2 100 km on one tank of petrol since the last fill-up on 18 April 2025, with free charging in a net-zero energy solar-powered bldg.

How to bring a bit of 🇨🇦 to our place in Queens ?

Pluck a « weed » out of the lawn and grow our own red maple.

Turns out thumb tacks work very well for counting skunk cabbage florets on a fruit before counting the seeds.

Or for turning a skunk cabbage fruit into a model of a virion ?

One of my grad students is measuring seed set of skunk cabbage fruits along NYC’s urban gradient. Today, we found out that the inside of a skunk cabbage fruit kind of looks like a pomegranate !

The more I learn about these odd little plants, the more I ❤️ them.

You know what they say…

The couple that gets bitten by their parrot together stays together.

Put these dill flowers from our balcony garden on the kitchen counter about 6 days ago.

So beautiful, still going strong and releasing the awesomest scent. I keep walking by just to smell it.

Our parrot. Making sure every bottle stays in its place.

Is it just me, or is it surprising that anyone who wishes to seem professional and be taken seriously would speak like this in public ?

Is it just me, or should the US Surgeon General be, at a minimum, someone who completed their medical training, including their residency ?

Sorry, MTG.

You can’t just gaslight this one.

Literally the whole world watched Chauvin kneel on George Floyd’s neck for an excruciating amount of time and murder him for absolutely no reason other than him being a black man.
May 15, 2025 at 11:06 AM
Um… people who want to foment hatred of “others” ?
May 9, 2025 at 11:27 AM
Well, at least we know that we do not have to worry about Polièvre leading our country. Hoping for more gains by the Bloc, the NDP & the Greens, but at least I can go to bed without a feeling of dread.
