Journeyman fairy-smith Jedediah has been summoned to deal with a mist that came creeping in on white feet.

This turns out not to be a figure of speech.
Jack Lenden had a great deal to say about the speed with which the mist had come in, running on white feet; in another man Jedediah might have taken this literally, but Mister Lenden was an excitable fellow and prone to a little trouble telling what he witnessed from what he feared. It was quite a surprise, therefore, to see the man had not been wrong: the mist hung over the northernmost field, which was scrubby and steep, and for that reason kept for sheep. The fact that the stone wolves were also to the north must have been an added worry for the Lendens, but this didn’t look like a wolf- mist. It was fringed all around with little white twists, thin enough to see through, but coiled into a pattern of unmistakable, delicate paws. They weren’t vulpine; they were soft-looking, with claws of pallid light. Seen individually they had a prettiness to them, like the foot of a cat or a stoat, but as they carried on around the entire blinding cloud, the whole thing had rather more the look of a woodlouse, a great hump of white carried along on infinite shifting toes.

Quote from Cursed Under London. Quote reads: ‘He’s making a run for it!’ shouted Herbert. ‘Cheeky sod,’ Randall exclaimed. They both lunged at Lazare, who turned and ran. Ahead of him in the alley, he saw Amber, running as fast as her little stumpy legs could carry her – which wasn’t very fast, not that Lazare was anyone to judge. He wasn’t one of nature’s great athletes. Generally, if an activity was worth Lazare messing up his hairdo or rumpling his doublet for, it had to be something he really enjoyed. As far as he was concerned, those activities were confined to acting, dancing and/or making love, so while he considered himself extremely skilled in those three things, he was not at all practised in the art of running away – let alone while encumbered by all of his worldly possessions.

Book extract reads: ‘Fin and I had been talking about moving in together for more than a year now. We’d agreed to find somewhere near Blithehurst. Fin can work from anywhere, but my job isn’t one I can do from home. We’d seen nice enough houses which we could afford within reasonable driving distance. They were in towns though, or much bigger villages than this one. Neither of us was keen on that. I’d grown up in a little old house out on its own in the countryside. These days, I lived in a cottage in the Blithehurst woods, well away from the manor. I wasn’t looking forward to having neighbours. Human neighbours, that is. We’d both be happy to put a bit of distance between us and the dryads in Blithehurst’s woods as well. They seemed to think they could run my life, with or without the Green Man’s permission. Frai, the eldest, who’d lived there since the Norman Conquest, said he hadn’t called on me for months, so I might as well make myself useful. I’d been up and down the country telling solitary dryads living in remnants of wild wood about each other. They started giving me oak saplings to take from one wood to another, and younger dryads began appearing.

I ran up the stairs, taking them two and three at a time. In the front bedroom, I emptied Fin’s suitcase onto the bed. I turned over her clothes, raking them apart with my hands. Nothing. I realised anyone outside would be able to see what I was doing. They’d also see I’d lost the towels I’d been wearing on the stairs. I quickly drew the curtains. Fin had hung the dress bag for her bridesmaid’s frock on the front of the wardrobe. I pulled the zip down so hard it jammed. I forced myself to go more slowly. Taking the frock out of the bag, I shook it. The shoes and the headdress of silk flowers fell onto the floor. I didn’t care about them. I carefully turned the dress inside out. I saw a fleck of white caught in a seam. A tiny, downy feather.

Ephraim Brady, unpleasant landlord, has come to the fairy-smiths with a problem: his tenants the Porter family own a cat, and the cat has started talking.

‘I did not witness the origin of its speechifying,’ Ephraim said tightly. ‘I came in during the talk of Little Tomkin and suchlike. Then I told Porter that I’d have no unkenned doings on any property of mine, and,’ he added through his teeth, ‘Porter said that the cat was a good beast and he begged me not to hurt it, that his children loved it and it was a fine hunter and I should consider the safety of my stores from mice. And then the animal said that the mice were all very well but that it was no common hireling and would catch coneys if it chose, and that it dearly loved a fine fat haunch fed on grass, such as noblecats should eat.’ Dislike of the grotesquerie was stiffening Ephraim’s every line, but evidently his memory of this politically minded mog’s opinions was rather good. John was bouncing up to ask more on the subject, but at this point there was a knock upon the jamb.

I looked up at the looming grey vessels, casting shadows over the high-rise buildings. There was nowhere to run. We had a day. Just one day. But that was enough for my mission. I had to kill my mother. I kept moving eastward. Abandoned vehicles littered the streets. It looked like an ordinary Ahmedabad traffic jam, except there were no horns beeping, no one shouting. Already the streets were largely devoid of the living. It was only by their absence that I noticed them: no fresh animal excrement, no sweaty humans jostling for space, no exhaust fumes, no street vendors selling roasted peanuts, or chai-wallahs serving endless cups of cutting-tea. But there were still looters, fanatics who refused to give up their homes, and several others with their own reasons. Like me.

He was a haunted house of a man, every mucky smear and unkind sneer a warning sign upon the wall, a ghostly howl of ‘beware’; every taciturn huff a locked door to a cellar of shadowy mysteries. Yet, as Lazare watched, he saw Fang gently adjust Tem’s hat to stop it falling down over her eyes. He spoke to her with soft words that Lazare couldn’t make out. His expression was open and warm. The haunted house had melted away into a welcoming home in front of Tem.
