Until there's a binding referendum backed by Congress, none of these are actually taken seriously anymore (which is where boycotting comes in). The pro-statehood party still uses the numbers and spins the narrative their way, but it's not the full story nor entirely reflective of the people's will.

This sentiment is well-meaning but misunderstands the political dynamics in PR. The current governor pushed this non-binding referendum ballot (along with a mock Presidential ballot) so they exist but it was also heavily boycotted. Too much happening behind those numbers to take them at face value.
