It is absolutely white supremacy that treats cooperative overlap as "wrong" or a threat while treating hostile, enforced silence as expected norm during a conversation — especially between friends or loved ones! So *many* of our cultures, and neuroatypical interactions, rely on overlap as support.

I think, and this is a personal observation , it’s only off topic if you aren’t sure your conversation partner sees the connection between thoughts. Sometimes we make a connection in our mind and just start talking about it and assuming the other person has the right context to make that connection.

Listen. ONE of the reasons I rock with Dolly (Capricorn Gang) is because she’s always proven to me that integrity may cause you pain, but it will never be the reason you suffer. Which is not to say that suffering won’t come, but it’ll never be because you abandoned yourself. That’ll keep you going.

Is it possible the only reason being interrupted bothers us so much is that it’s supposed to? This will be an easy no for many people, I’m sure, but I hope they ask themselves why. What feeling does it give you? What does it mean to you when you’re interrupted by a conversation partner?

The politeness question also asks us to infer that the interrupter either doesn’t care what the speaker has to say or assumes they know what the speaker will say, but I find that more often than not, it actually indicates excitement or passion or deep curiosity about the topic being discussed.

Still, the insistence that interrupting is always impolite doesn’t leave room for the nuances of banter, cadence, or the tendency of some people to monologue until they’re interrupted because they can’t break the chain of their own thought and need the conversation partner to do so.

However, not everybody can do this because the interruption they want to make doesn’t build on the current topic as much as it changes the topic, and that’s difficult for someone (like me!) who likes to stay on topic until the subject naturally diverges into something new, but adjacent.

I know it’s not technically polite, but I love having a conversation with other people who are comfortable with short interjecting interruptions. To me it makes the conversation feel more like something we’re weaving together rather than alternating individual presentations. It feels more alive.
