Craziest part of that newest Gelb Bichette article though is the idea that the Phillies at least partially considered a 20 YEAR CONTRACT for Bryce Harper in 2019

Often, the Phillies have viewed their way of deferring money as spreading the total guarantee over a longer term. Once, during the Bryce Harper negotiations in 2019, front-office officials floated the concept of a 20-year deal that would have paid him his desired $330 million but lessened the annual average value (AAV) so the Phillies could better manage potential luxury tax bills. They settled on 13 years for Harper, who currently has the 33rd-highest AAV in MLB for the 2026 season.”
