If the Phillies had matched the Mets offer, it would have cost picks, international signing money & $42mm, plus having to trade Bohm or Stott for 50 cents on the dollar, downgrade at catcher, only to have Bichette opt out next October

Reminder that the Phillies also currently don’t employ a starting catcher
It was fun while it lasted but the Bo Bichette to Phillies thing probably never got higher than a 40% chance. Which is way higher than it was than the 1% it was a couple weeks ago. Definitely sucks all the air out of the offseason and now they have to pay Realmuto whatever he wants

Phillies were in on longer deal, lower AAV, if Bichette wanted $42M a year and to hit FA again, that was not a construct they could afford

Further evidence Philadelphia was meant to be a two-club city.
A weird coincidence I discovered while doing some research:
The Phillies and Athletics both lost 100 games in 1936
Both finished in last place in their respective league
Both had to have their All-Star rep added to the team
Both sent their 3B to the ASG
Both 3B were nicknamed “Pinky”
