Obey in advance and democracy dies in broad daylight.
This deadpan Washington Post story reports on Trump’s blatantly corrupt effort to strongarm an appointment for his daughter in law—who has never held any public office—as a US Senator without a single acknowledgment that it might be some kind of impropriety. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

Writing is thinking.

It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.
This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?

American Exceptionalism
If you’re outside the U.S. it’s weird to immediately recognize the extreme American-ness of the UNH CEO murder and see how it's glossed over in the U.S. discourse:

He had a DIY gun made with a legally sold kit and shot the CEO of a healthcare company because of its egregious business practices.

Good thread on the economic reasons for the regimes collapse and HTS' success in Syria.
🧵Look towards the light.
As Rebel forces in Syria advanced across Syria & never stopped a key question was why the Regime evaporated. Syria by night provides some clues on how the Regime's social contract collapsed.

What a tragedy it would be if the US allowed the Kurds to be defeated.

Turkiye is the duplicitous ally you can't live with and probably shouldn't try to live without..
Defending #Rojava is both politically and morally essential. The Kurds in Rojava were the forces that led the war against ISIS, a threat to human dignity on an international scale. The Kurds not only liberated the Kurdish region in Syria but also sacrificed many young lives in Raqqa, the👇🧵

Good, quick summary of where things stand now amongst the various factions in Syria.

Although it doesn't mention anything of the southern rebels or many of the minority sects.

Syria is mind-numbingly complicated..
A geopol thread on actor's goals in Syria post-Assad. This'll be a long one so bear with me please.

Let's start with Hayhat Tahir as-Shams. They want a unified, Islamic state under their control aligned but not controlled by Turkey. Tense but working relations with Israel and Iran.

At this point, I am less concerned with HTS and its governing vision than I am with factional chaos.

HTS ran a tight ship in about two-thirds of Idlib; I doubt it can effectively scale that model nationally. And Jolani is not the boss of all these newly mobilized groups in Syria’s center and south.

I have been thinking that it isn't just Assad's regime that's collapsing. Russia's imminent economic collapse is likely the thing that is driving it. My guess is they can't pay salaries to Assad's forces, and the forces found a better deal.

Given this week’s events Assad's regime is finished & it’s a race to Damascus. The Russian position in Syria, and MENA region writ large is consequently in deep trouble, because of Syria’s importance as a logistics hub for Russian operations. Short thread. 1/
