if you don't play or follow golf (or just don't get why so many people love it) this probably isn't on your radar but it should be understood as both a naked land grab and an attack on a part of DC's black history
A NOTE FROM NATIONAL LINKS TRUST As a DC golfer, you know how special the East Potomac, Langston, and Rock Creek courses are. But their future is under threat. In 2020, the National Links Trust began a 50-year lease of DCS courses to manage and oversee rehabilitation projects that will guarantee a bright future for public golf. However, the Department of the Interior has taken steps to terminate this lease. If successful, the move would derail plans already underway and could undermine our promise to keep DC municipal golf affordable and accessible for all. PlayDCgolf and the National Links Trust remain fully committed to honoring the legacies and principles of DC's historic public courses. If you agree, we're asking you to stand with us. Purchase some NLT merch or donate directly. Every show of support helps. Langston Golf Course is home to the oldest African American men's and women's golf clubs in the United States. Langston's history is directly tied to the desegregation of sport in our country. The course was managed by professional golfer Lee Elder, the first African American to play in the Masters and 2019 recipient of the USGAs prestigious Bob Jones Award, from 1978 to 1981. Elder invested in improving the course, and added a driving range to make the facility more popular. More than anything else, this is what led some Senate Democrats to cut a deal: Trump’s willingness to hurt people exceeds their willingness to see people get hurt. I want to give them their due on this: They are hearing from their constituents and seeing the mounting problems, and they are trying to do what they see as the responsible, moral thing. They do not believe that holding out will lead to Trump restoring the subsidies. They fear that their Republican colleagues would, under mounting pressure, do as Trump had demanded and abolish the filibuster. (Whether that would be a good or a bad thing is a subject for another column.) This, in the end, is the calculation the defecting Senate Democrats are making: They don’t think a longer shutdown will cause Trump to cave. They just think it will cause more damage. If I were in the Senate, I wouldn’t vote for this compromise. Shutdowns are an opportunity to make an argument, and the country was just starting to pay attention. If Trump wanted to cancel flights over Thanksgiving rather than keep health care costs down, I don’t see why Democrats should save him from making his priorities so exquisitely clear. And I worry that Democrats have just taught Trump that they will fold under pressure. That’s the kind of lesson he remembers.

Once you start thinking of AI as a war on humanity, on human thought, on human inquiry, on human labor, on nuance and critical thinking, it slots in pretty seamlessly with the right wing ideological project, oligarchical political projects, big tech's political projects, etc
The future being pushed by both AI boosters and educational censors is one where access to information is tightly controlled. Children will not be allowed to read certain books or learn certain narratives. “Research” will be performed only through one of a select few artificial intelligence tools owned by AI giants which are uniformly aligned behind the Trump administration and which have gone to the ends of the earth to prevent their black box machines from spitting out “woke” answers lest they catch the ire of the administration. School boards and library boards, forced to comply with increasingly restrictive laws, funding cuts, and the threat of being defunded entirely, leap at the chance to be considered forward looking by embracing AI tools, or apply for grants from government groups like the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which is increasingly giving out grants specifically to AI projects.
