I have 895 followers here on no posts and feel obligated to use my first post to say I am definitely the quake guy, you are not here by mistake, I am not just a regular person with a Michael Bolton name, I am the famous John Carmack, with a different face for some reason
Unpopular opinion, but I think it’s good to practice empathy even towards people who don’t practice empathy.

(I say “unpopular” bc they crucified the first guy who built a platform on that)

ADHD meds are controlled substances; meaning you can still get them with a doctor’s prescription, but are legally required to be inconvenienced several hours per month when picking them up.

(my old pharmacy got sold to a new owner who “doesn’t sell narcotics”; 24 hours later I have a new pharmacy)

Other people in my peer group may have families, communities, and their mental health, but last month I reduced my team’s CI from 35 minutes to 7, so who’s **really** winning the game here

It’s really funny how Vince Gilligan cast the perfect Gus Fring—a man so unassuming and even-tempered he fits right in as the New Mexico Dave Thomas—and a decade later casting Giancarlo is shorthand for “hey this is the bad guy”

Generative AI hallucinating makes it completely useless for the thing we want it to do but people are using it for that thing anyway and that is terrifying

They didn’t want those things, they wanted trump in power and those were the talking points their media bubble gave them
MAGA didn’t get Epstein files released, they didn’t get lower gas/grocery prices, they will soon have to pay for trade war tariffs, DOGE hasn’t provided proof of fraud found nor savings gained nor referred anyone to be arrested. Gullible idiot cult were conned.

I see a lot of “AI is replacing engineers” hype, but the one company that actually tried replacing me with an LLM lost so many clients they went bankrupt in less than a year.

I used up all my social capital warning people about Trump the first time. I’m so isolated and burned out now, the only goal I hope for is survival.

Idk why I bother with vulnerability on the open internet; it requires empathy and/or intelligence to respond well. Litmus test, maybe.

LLMs are a great tool, it’s like if I had a shovel that hit **just** to the left or right of where I was aiming, and sometimes shoveled some dirt on the third or fourth try!

Worried about losing access to US federal data that may go off-line, or already is? You’re not alone—but duplication isn’t the answer.

Many ongoing efforts have already archived key datasets and many more are ongoing. Check out these existing resources and, if you can, support their work. 🧵

I grew up around airplanes. My dad flew us to family gatherings in his Beech Baron. I landed my first touch-and-go in a Cessna 152 at the age of 17. Over decades of flights, I never felt safer than when in the hands of air traffic control. I wonder if tomorrow I’ll finally stop crying.
