I write about every Chicago #Cubs game, with three up, and three down at CubCavern.substack.com.

Offseason: Colts fan, Iowa Hawkeye alum, Portland Trailblazers. Wow, am I eclectic.

All seasons: Pearl Jam, grunge, sarcasm.
Sports is all about expectations. I didn’t think the Colts would even be decent this year. The fast start just makes everything more painful. Not unlike the 2025 Cubs, to be honest.

(Also GMs who prefer to make shrewd minor deals and congratulate their intelligence)

Only way out is to blow this all up. QB purgatory since Rivers. Lots of pretty good players. Lot of late season tailspins with no margin for error. Grasping at straws for years. #Colts

Also seriously 2025 was a gift to get all your questions answered on Anthony, yet not addressing the backup situation further after his injury and Jones’ broken fibula is appalling. Almost as appalling as the Sauce trade. #Colts

Just a completely different team without Buckner. That’s something else the Colts will have to reckon with in offseason. He’s awesome but not getting younger. They haven’t been able to supplement that D-Line with talent.

I cannot believe that kicker miss. I cannot believe that 4th down CALL. I especially can’t believe how quick Fox cut to the Def Leppard “bringing on the heartbreak” bumper music. 🧑‍🍳😘 #B1G #B1GonFox

Just needs that Pitch Lab (tm)!

I like this better than I would have Cease, FWIW. Still would like a look at your guy Joe Ryan.

I may stand corrected, and I’d like this for the #Cubs if it occurs. Still a good pitcher in here, and he’s a righty.

Note that this is a national columnist breaking this, it’s not the usual coulda-woulda stuff floated from Jed’s office to the usual suspects.

I’ve thought about writing numerous posts this offseason at the Cub Cavern, but I’m far too cynical, things far too bleak and FO signing usual retreads and utility washouts. At least not until someone confirms the length of the GM’s extension, which still hasn’t happened.

My guess is they rally and finish 11-6 but if the Colts do slip to 10-7, I’m mentally preparing for that loss in tiebreaker to the Chiefs, Steelers or Texans for a playoff spot.

Either way, not getting past the first weekend and purgatory endures.

I’m convinced CJ Stroud and Nico Collins have a “pretty good” ceiling as well, unfortunately they play the Colts 2x a year and pad those stats.

It is absolutely criminal that the Colts traded two firsts for Sauce Gardner.

Yes, the Colts are pretty good. Sauce is pretty good. Now looking at “pretty good” for quite some time, and unfortunately, this is what “pretty good” is. Still in purgatory and Ballard’s all-in move will keep us there.
