If visiting Guadalupe and Carlsbad, White Sands is close-ish, over in New Mexico. It lies in the basin to the west of the Sacramento Mountains.

Palo Duro Canyon is amazing. It is about 25 miles from Amarillo. It’s a state park, and admission fee is five dollars (if I remember correctly.) It is one of several spots in Texas that I’d visit - Guadalupe Mountain and Carlsbad Caverns in West TX. Big Bend on the border with Mexico.

This is the doing of Brandon Creighton, the new chancellor of the Texas Tech system. He most recently was a member of the Texas state legislature. He has sponsored some incredibly bad legislation, most recently, SB 17 and SB 37 which gutted DEI and promoted censorship of race and gender topics.
