I like making bread, geohashing, running and riding bikes, looking at birds, and I've just finished a linguistics PhD.
I miss the days when my brain's primary association with the name Donald was with the last name Bradman

Idiolectal observation of the day: intrusive R can also be strengthened to a trill in styles when I would trill other Rs. For example, trying to sound fancy singing Christmas carols, I noticed "hosanna-[r]-in excelsis" come out.

Vale William Labov.

Inspired by a colleague on X, I think my favourite Bill Labov quote is:

“I have resisted the term *sociolinguistics* for many years, since it implies that there can be a successful linguistic theory or practice which is not social.”

Thank you for everything, Bill.

Youtube seems to think I want to watch videos with a couple of hundred views from random guys with a handful of followers solving crosswords and things. They look irredeemably tedious and I don't know how many times I've clicked "not interested", but they keep being recommended.

I need to get out and exercise some of this anxiety away but unfortunately it's 32 degrees out there. Might go out and dissolve into a pile of sweat anyway.

8 runners left out of a field of 75 in the backyard ultra world championship have reached the 400 mile mark (96 hours). Utterly mindboggling. Aussie Phil Gore among them
