Maybe what we need are more, smaller tents?
jonathanhogg.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy
In my experience, tents seem to be mostly enlarged to accommodate fascists

Lets be honest, we've all already bought all the arduinos we'll ever need

Ironically, the lights are out in the studio today. I'm considering reprogramming all of these to be plain white so I can get some work done…

@grahamdunning this talk was great, as was his set the next night, which also mixed in some of the paper records made by participants in the workshop he ran. Super cool was that some of the plastic segments glowed under the UV lighting!

Just realised that I never showed you the full glory of this installation. Feast your eyes on all 15 of the baubles lit at once

OK, I have now rendered 23 sheets of correx into 318 pieces. As predicted, the tabletop has taken a beating…

#outputarts #inthestudio #installationart
A mass of white plastic long triangles and small diamonds leans up against one of the shelving units in the studio. The pile is arranged into bunches of similar pieces of different size, with the larger pieces in the back and smaller ones heaped in front. Stacked against each other, the arrangement has a pleasing, snowy-mountain-range sort of vibe going on. Also, the sun through a window sharply picks out one corner of the pile. The usually ugly studio carpet looks almost sea-like. A close-up view of the, now pretty trashed trestle tabletop. It's once, mostly pristine white surface is scored by hundreds of cutting marks that expose the brown MDF below. The marks are mostly horizontal –  parallel to the long edge of the table – but a few are diagonal across these and the result forms a sort of scratchy, half-visible capital A.

Woo! The @alpaca talks are all up for your viewing pleasure:

Looking forward to catching up on the second weekend, which I missed.

I have forced myself to watch my own Flitter talk back and it is not as bad as it felt […]

Phew! Ill-advised Nextcloud upgrade just made me glad, once again, for ZFS auto-snapshots and rollback…

Ran a workshop on Wednesday at a nearby residential care home making Ojo de Dios using wool scraps and leftover bits of willow – great fun and really lovely results from a simple and meditative process

#weaving #communityart #OjoDeDios
A fake wood circular table top has 9 different woven ornaments lying on it. Each is structured around crossed sticks wound with wool. The shapes are mostly diamonds using a pair of crossed sticks and wrapped in two different colours of wool. One uses three sticks to make a hexagonal shape. The wool is a mix of white, orange, yellow, purples, blues and pinks. A few of the Ojo de Dios also have a wool tassel on one corner.

The cutting has begun for the next big project. This tabletop will be wrecked by the time I’m finished. Still, “eggs, omelettes” as Andy always says…

#outputarts #inthestudio #installationart
A mostly white tabletop with a steel ruler, heavy metal cutting guide and a Stanley knife with some tape on the handle with the word “SHARP” written on it (this is a vain attempt to remind me to use the other knife for cutting up boxes and shit). The tabletop already shows a series of long cut marks across the surface. There’s an odd shadow on the table, which is actually where I was spraying boxes black on a piece of cardboard and hadn’t quite realised how much the spray was spreading onto the table…

@nnenov I think most of the stuff I want has a Rust equivalent. We’ll see once I get into actually working on the engine instead of futzing with the model and compiler…
jonathanhogg.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy
@nnenov Rust version is still very, very incomplete. I am also in the process of rewriting a large chunk of the model. Again…

Woohoo! Just managed to get tickets to see five films at the London Film Festival. Sadly, the 6th that we wanted to see is sold out across all three showings already (tickets went on sale to the general public one hour ago…)

The difference in magnification with my new occupational glasses means everything on my workbench looks slightly larger-than-life, which is quite odd as I feel like I've shrunk…

Excitingly, the overlap between the two pairs of varifocals is laptop-screen distance. So I now get the fun of figuring out which pair is more comfortable for programming, with each requiring me to hold my head at a slightly different angle…
jonathanhogg.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy
@DamonHD yeah, these are, similarly, two pairs of varifocals for out-and-about and working at my bench
jonathanhogg.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy
New achievement unlocked! I am now old enough to require two pairs of glasses with different prescriptions
jonathanhogg.mastodon.social.ap.brid.gy
@nnenov current working model is that you can stick multiple nodes on the same line with `<<` between them and they are interpreted as an indented chain. Then you only need a single level of indentation below that and those things are appended to the node on the end of the chain

This morning i made a paper record with Jo Kazuhiro at Alpaca. Very cool concept: drawing the groove in Inkscape and then etching it into card with a cutting plotter.

@nnenov thanks! It was great to hang out.

I looked again at the grammar today and I think I’ve figured out how to support collapsing deep hierarchies onto a single line. Though I’m not sure what the best operator to use is. Trying “<<“ to see how I feel about it…

It’s almost time! I am in Sheffield for the Alpaca conference and festival. I’ll be talking about Flitter this afternoon. You’ll be pleased to hear that I have now finished my slides, but have not yet got my talk down to 15 minutes…

#alpaca2025 #flitterlang
A – not yet very interesting – view of the stage at the Alpaca conference, showing a projection screen, a long table, a couple of mic stands and a blue curtain behind. The AV engineer is busy poking at a laptop on the table.

I am now writing my slides for my talk tomorrow

What's that you say? "Cutting it a bit fine, Jonathan?". This is HOW I ROLL!

Stopped off in Birkenhead on the way to install 205 Ubuntu updates and recalibrate the sandpit

#subterraneanelevator
A view of sand shaped into peaks and troughs with coloured light projected onto it catching the sides of the hills and painting them in different colours from cyans to pinks.
