JO Kazuhiro's Fragmented Music project uses slices of etched plastic as single steps in a vinyl sequencer-oscillator. This talk/demo from the @alpaca conference explains how it works.
I love how visual it is, the playful jigsaw feel to it. Lovely sounds and textures, and the combination of […]

Happy Anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, to all decent people.
Plaque "THE BATTLE OF CABLE STREET
The people of East London rallied to Cable Street on the 4th October 1936 and forced back the march of the fascist
Oswald Mosley and his Blackshirts through the streets of the East End.
"THEY SHALL NOT PASS""

Pre-pre-pre-announcement that around the end of the year/early spring we'll be announcing some new funded residencies, based at our new studio in Cornwall to run around Aug/Sept 2026.

The theme this time is moths and their viruses - as part of a bigger research grant on how viruses and their […]

I became disillusioned with generative AI in 1995.

"Wrote some c code that read in a text file, constructed a frequency table showing how often each letter came after each letter then randomly generated words using the frequency table to determine probabilities.

If you give it a german file […]

I'm trying to improve my tap tempo for working with percussionists, but the more I read about tap tempo algorithms the less I know..

Some people take a mean average, but I guess that only takes the first and last tap into account? I guess then errors get spread out over a longer period..
Some […]

New track made with some samples of galena from Wheal Clinton in Flushing, this was a small mine that was only worked for a couple of years. It was closed in 1858 after being flooded and not considered economically viable. Occasional lumps of mineralised rock can still be found here and there on […]

Not sure if introducing ID cards will be the slam dunk that Starmer thinks it is, against a far right whose domination of social media was made fully possible by twisting civil liberty issues during the pandemic

Strudel's audio engine is SuperDough mostly by @froos, which is based on SuperDirt mostly by @julian, which is based on 'dirt' a sampler made by me and originally called 'datadirt', but very heavily based on MSG by @adeward

The longest and shortest days mark Volunteer Responsibility Amnesty Day https://web.archive.org/web/20250330163310/https://www.volunteeramnestyday.net/ (ironically, looks like the volunteer running the site ran out of energy) The next Volunteer Responsibility Amnesty Day is 21st December 2025 *Current responsibility:* Looking after live coding related internet services across three different servers.. The hosteurope, netcup and linode ones here: https://doc.patternclub.org/FNs6V7H8RemGHROmL7B52g?view *Want to keep doing this?*: I think others would do a better job, for a start I don't have enough time to keep it all up to date and secure, or to try to inject energy into e.g. the toplap blog or discourse forum. I'd love someone else to take them on or help sunset them. There are others already helping with some of the services, so they'd have to be one of those people or work with them. *Next steps*: Due to the data involved, it would be great if one or more people with existing responsibility/trust in the live coding community could jump in and take over. Finances aren't a problem, costs can be refunded via the TOPLAP open collective fund which is healthy enough. I'd be very happy to help with the transition!
