It'll be like going back to the good ol' days. Dad reading the newspaper, pouring from the long-neck into a glass.

"Hey darl, kids, you see here in the paper, Routleys is having a 25% off sale. We should get in the Kingswood and head up for a bargain or two. Get yourself someting nice."

Our cats always came home. Sometimes they were gone for a while until whoever "adopted" them stopped feeding them (deliberately, or accidentally). I think the longest was about 2 weeks.

I'm a guardian druid. I've done the outside, and have just a fire and a rug inside the house.

Bonus comment:

Expect a lot of emergent phishing to target this ban, and watch how much identity information is handed over as technically inexperienced adults fear their Facebook/X/YouTube accounts are about to be limited/closed.

tldr; this topic is incredibly complex, the goals and implementation are both naive and unrealistic ensuring they will not be achieved WHILE imposing harms to Australian adults regarding identity theft.

and the government is going to have to limit new applications and platforms on a weekly basis to keep up with the migration of teenagers to new spaces free of restrictions.

The middle one is probably the easiest from a technology PoV, but politically hard. You ban algorithmic content feeds.

Well, the government claims these will reduce "cyberbullying, harmful content, and online predators".

I cannot see how any of these reforms will do this in a meaningful way (remember, greater good) while imposing harms on the entire adult population.

The first and last is "whack a mole"

Lots of parents and families are doing it really tough, and having someething, anything that will make their lives easier is a simple selling point. I also don't believe that many parents have enough experience with technology to understand what their kids are doing now, let alone next week.

Inexperience with technology, and parenting fatigue. I get both of them, and understand it. Having to say "no" all the time and spend time understanding what your kids are up to is incredibly wearying. Being able to say "it's the law" definitely eases up on that burden.

a way to connect with other like individuals. Share stories, get support. This is particularly true in geographically remote, smaller communities.

So, grumpy old man, why are so many parents in favour of this?

I can only assume it comes from a couple of angles.

accellerate the movement of young people to platforms that are less secure and less likely to respect the privacy of the content being used on those platforms. This is very bad.

The other externality that worries me most is that for some, particularly marginalised communities, these apps are

Any ability to protect that data, as well as being able to avoid any liability for a lack of diligence with that information. This is something that should deeply concern everybody, but it's being ignored.

Even if the ability to limit access to social media was technically feasible to a sub-set of the community.

This leads to the second part, which is the adverse effects of the limitations. This includes having to provide identification information to organisations that have not proven

.. both for the intended audience, as well as what I believe are significant externalities in this rushed implementation for the rest of Australias citizens.

There is commentary by experts in the field of childhood safety that this will not achieve the benefits that are being described.

Like many things in life, there are choices about "the greater good", which I very strongly subscribe to. And this is where I differ with many commenters on this topic. I do not believe these laws pass the test of "the greater good", ..

I'm terminally online, and have been since there's been newsgroups, MUDs and other ways of communicating relatively quickly via computers with groups of humans. I understand the genesis of a lot of the less savory parts of the industry.
