Trying to help us learn from history correctly. They/Them. Disaster Bi.
Pinned
Greetings. Currently telling everyone the wonderful story of the wacky fun of being in the Donner Party. Sometimes I throw in disaster and weather stories. Sometimes I stop being polite and start getting real. Also part of a 90s sci-fi podcast crew with dozens of fans. Dozens!
December 5, 1846. From the diary of Patrick Breen: "Fine, clear day. Beautiful sunshine. Thawing a little. Looks delightful after the long snow storm."

The thing about Patrick Breen isn't he doesn't bother to mention things like all the buried oxen they can't find.

My hot take is that I don't give a fuck if someone without disabilities gets an accommodation. They get a slightly better grade on a test? Tests are just part of a grade or portfolio and also, who FUCKING CARES. I care that a disabled person isn't *penalized* for needing more time.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

December 3, 1846.

"Snowed a little last night; bright and cloudy at intervals all night. To day Cloudy; snows none; wind S.W.; warm but not enough so to thaw snow [, which is] lying deep allround. Expecting it to thaw a little to day..."

She shouldn't have to keep doing this by herself. She is supposedly a member of a political party and every single one of her *colleagues* should be BLASTING the fascist in chief. ALL OF THEM. Where is the solidarity???

TLDR disaster: December 2, 2016.

People have to work, play, and sleep somewhere. And no place is perhaps more expensive to work, play, and sleep like the Bay Area.

And that's how people who worked, played, and slept in the place they could afford died by fire.

TLDR disaster on December 1, 1958: 90 children go to school in Chicago and do not come home along with 3 nuns.

All because of grandfather clauses exempting the old school from modern fire codes.

December 1, 1846. The lake camp wakes up to more snow and all of the cattle, including butchered cattle, buried by snow. This includes the mules that kept the mountain party from continuing to Fort Sutter.

Digging to find them is tedious and often fruitless.

November 29, 1846: Breen diary entry...

"Still snowing. Now about 3 ft [91 centimeters] deep. Wind W. Killed my last oxen today. Will skin them tomorrow. Gave another yoke to Fosters. Hard to get wood."

Patrick Breen's diary for Nov 27 and 28, 1846.

"Continues to snow. The ground not covered. Wind W. Dull prospect for crossing the mountains."

"Snowing fast now. About 10 o'clock, snow 8 or 10 in [20–25 centimeters] deep. Soft wet snow. Weather not cold. Wind W."

November 26, 1846: "Began to snow yesterday in the evening. Now rains or sleet. The mountaineers don't start to day."

Patrick Breen's diary entry lets us know that another try over the mountain has been postponed by weather.

The DOT advising people to "dress up" for airport travel are going to get people killed in an emergency. Heals and emergency evacuation. Synthetic fabric and fuel fed fires.

Plus who cares if people wear PJs, as long as they have sensible shoes and natural fibers for safety reasons.

One, this is awful...

Two, will this be a cladding situation like Grenfell?
A fire engulfed a residential tower complex in Hong Kong on Wednesday, killing several people as firefighters struggled to control the blaze. Authorities say they do not yet know how many people may still be trapped inside.

November 25, 1846.

Breen keeps writing in his diary.

"Wind about W.N.W. Cloudy. Looks like the eve of a snow storm. Our mountaineers intend trying to cross the Mountain tomorrow if [the weather is] fair. Froze hard last night."

BSG S4E17: "Someone to Watch Over Me."

Survivor Count: 39,556 as no one died, but the end of this episode will change that. Probably.

We need a 🍇 by proxy and kidnapping CW.

The Galatica is in bad shape. It is probably gonna fucking break any day now.

Congratulations to Six...

Melanie Janene Thorton was born May 13, 1967 in Charleston, South Carolina.

She was musically inclined from a young age: singing, piano, and clarinet. Aretha Franklin and Roberta Flack were her idols.

In the early 1990s she went to Germany...

They are fighting actually, and turning back. Over Sutter's mules actually.

The mules keep sinking in snow.
