Standard disclaimer: conference bleets are eye-witness accounts and should be treated as such, with all the Loftus effects and reliability concerns that involves: www.scientificamerican.com/article/do-t...

I don't bleet Q&As.
Why Science Tells Us Not to Rely on Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitness testimony is fickle and, all too often, shockingly inaccurate

We're going to see a lot of bullshit in the coming days and weeks about "causes of autism", and most will be based on flawed, over-interpreted observational studies (1/n)

Looks like awesome work @caina89.bsky.social and team! Will have to read in more depth.

ADHD label is wrong here?

Why "causal" above? Psychiatric disorders = complex traits, so variants aren't causal (c.f. Gly380Arg–FGFR3 mutations in achondroplasia). "Causal" variants in complex traits are statistically causal (responsible for the association), not necessary nor sufficient for the development of illness.

On the day we were awarded an #ERCAdG from the @erc.europa.eu, I want to highlight this non-science paper I wrote with ‪@deefitzgerald.bsky.social‬ on research culture:

Why? Because I'm often told we need to chose between excellence and kindness

Excited about our new preprint: 1st successful genome-wide study of >61,000 panic attack and 29,000 panic disorder cases. www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1... We find 17 associations & evidence that peripheral neurons in eye, lungs and heart are involved in panic & other psychiatric disorders 1/n

Can't post this without the acknowledgement:

"We dedicate this paper to Robert Keers, a wonderful friend, colleague, mentor and scientist, whom we lost too soon. This project continued in his absence, with contributions from many colleagues who helped to complete the work that he started."

I'm fortunate enough to be a Research Scholar with OurFutureHealth, the UK’s largest health research programme. They are hosting webinars for researchers to share the exciting opportunities this unique resource can offer your research. 1/4

Dammit, that's so much more pithy than my 30 minute lecture saying the same thing...

Not my expertise, but my guess is that UK Biobank have a) participants who are very research-motivated and willing to engage (remember most people invited to UK Biobank didn't do it!), and b) zealously protect their participants time such that they are only asked to do 1-2 big things per year.

Thanks also to the coding team (see next bleet) who put together the algorithms for this work, which can be found here: github.com/ColemanResea... (as well as a mirror on the DATAMIND GitHub)

(RAP-friendly implementation is a work in progress...!)
