I wonder if the author's definition of "prediction" is a bit too limiting. Sure, SF is more about myth-making than prediction, but doesn't mean that there aren't successful extrapolations of the future. It still astonishes me how accurately Leinster's "A Logic Named Joe" predicted the internet.

Political leanings aside, this is objectively false. The regime is still there, and there's a bunch of generals with a lot of vested interest in keeping it that way.

I remember reading that the most reliable predictor of belief in a conspiracy theory is if you already believe in another conspiracy theory. A bit recursive, but very fascinating if true.

I really liked how the movie utilized humor.

I would love to learn more about the economics of journalism before and after the internet. I always thought part of the problem is that nobody expects to pay for news anymore, but idk for sure if that's true; or if news media was ever profitable on its own, even before the internet...

Youtube's copyright system is annoying to say the least. They constantly flag stuff that shouldn't be flagged, and they seem to be completely oblivious to the concept of fair use.

I think this relies on the idea that Trump is a cause rather than a consequence, which I don't agree with. Sure, he's got a cult of personality thing going, but even so most of his followers are still traditionally republican voters.

Depends on the city. Some cities are not that walkable.

I was watching it and in the middle of it my internet stopped working. Now it is stuck buffering on a picture of Pete Hegseth staring at me. I think that's enough YouTube for me for today.

Great movie -- though I hate that this is so often compared to The Matrix. The similarities are surface level, otherwise the two are very different.

Reminds of people who want to "bring back" the 50s, but conveniently forget what the tax rate was in the 50s.

I applaud your resolve to stay off doomscrolling while on vacation.

There are many industries that depend on POD (e.g. RPGs) which is a good thing, since their customers are fully satisfied with POD. But it's always clearly labeled as POD and target audience know what they're buying. It's also not always obvious. Some offset printing is just bad without being POD.

I think the point we should all take from all this is that people shouldn't have "faves" at all. If someone has done good work, appreciate the good work and leave it at that. No matter what, they will always have the potential to be (or become) scumbags.

I've noticed a lot of changes on youtube recently, mostly for the worse. Like randomly things won't work and I have to refresh the page 100 times a day. I'm guessing they've been trying to cut costs and a bunch of shit is broken behind the scenes.
