My dad passed away last week. He endured years of chronic health challenges stemming from Crohn's disease and, later in life, battling blood cancer amongst other health challenges. He was the definition of quiet strength and persistence. He will be missed.

I appreciate, "A PhD is marathon, not a sprint," but it's not a race at all.

To me, a PhD is a hike (with no trails) up a tall mountain in the distance. The end goal is clear, but the journey is long, dynamic, unique, entirely your own, and itself more important than any milestone.

Cutting $20 billion to NIH over 25 years may save $500 billion on paper, but it’d end up costing $8.2 trillion in lost human health.
