EU politics and sustainable transport, especially railways. Brit who became German and lives in a village in France. When he's not escaping it on a train or a folding bicycle. Teaches at College of Europe, still writes a blog, photographs with a drone.

Also this "is there a contradiction between what the UK is doing nationally, and re. the tunnel" is weird in that column. The UK cannot do to Eurostar what it has done nationally. It has no political control. Given that, competition is the only option open.
jonworth.eu
Yeah, this column is rather too simplistic. I think Temple Mills access is an important first domino that has to fall, but whether the ones after that do indeed fall is not at all simple.

Right. But it is nowhere near the scandal Calder presents. I cannot imagine this being a major issue.

(Calder is a pain IMHO - he's always exaggerating)

Just did a double take mixing up Ed Davey and @ottoenglish.bsky.social due to similar-ish images they use here. I’m not sure that’s good for either of them! 🙂
Ed Davey. Or is it Otto? Otto. Or is it Ed Davey
jonworth.eu
Indeed. Absolutely. And this was a good towpath - asphalt throughout (although a bit bumpy in places)

Also note: I didn’t crash 🙂

I just didn’t trim the Timelapse. There’s one place where it looks like I hit a fence. That was simply me turning the handlebar when stopped!

Today I’ve been exploring railways in Bourgogne, in particular the temporarily or de facto permanently closed Clamecy - Corbigny line, south of Auxerre

Not sure what to conclude, but it was a nice sunny autumn day, and a nice cycle along the Canal du Nivernais

Yes! Had heard this was imminent. Going there 19th Oct :-)

OK, makes sense! I will take the one with the change on Thursday - will report how it works out!
jonworth.eu
What is the benefit of taking that one, rather than the one where you change in Zweisimmen? (Other than avoiding the change is there any other benefit?)
jonworth.eu
And I am doing this on Thursday next week - will post some photos 😀

(Chamonix-Martigny - trains are all pretty standard so just take any train there - it's the views that are amazing. From Chamonix sit right side immediately into Switzerland, then left side for the bit down the cliff at the end)

I asked a Swiss friend about the MOB

Says the interior is nicer and more spacious on the non gauge changing GoldenPass trains, so I will go for that (meaning a change of train in Zweisimmen), rather than taking the direct Montreux-Spiez.
jonworth.eu
Better than Martigny to Chamonix, up the cliff and along the gorge?

And a normal panoramic train will do the job just fine 😀

Is the 12:43 departure that as well? Train PE 2220 (has a load more stops than the through service)

My time is tight - I cannot wait until 14:43, sadly.

I looked at their website and it tried to ask me for a 19 CHF reservation. Is that not right?
jonworth.eu
Yes, I agree. Although in the end everything is just messing around at the edges until electrification comes.
jonworth.eu
Right. The alignment is not too bad, and for a non electrified line the speeds also OK. But a Siemens Desiro used there currently is vMax 120 😀

So I have an upside to France's government crisis 😀

An event next week I was due to attend in Paris is cancelled

So rather than Bourgogne - Paris - Strasbourg - Zürich, I am now going Bourgogne - Montreux - Zweisimmen - Zürich instead, on one of Switzerland's most scenic routes 😀

Via Leipzig, Dresden, Görlitz, not Cottbus. When that one is electrified. May take a while.
