So we're both right, and we've had a fun argument about it, now lets do as OP says and shake hands, ok? :)

how Rules make Systems that deliver Outcomes, and how those Outcomes provide players with Experiences. Obviously Portal has significant mechanical overlap with other shooters, but barely any experiential overlap. Which is why you feel strongly it isn't a shooter, and I can keep saying it is one.

You're stopping the description of a mechanic at the input level, I'm using the definition of a mechanic that includes how a game interprets those inputs through rules. Again, it's all a bit pedantic, my argument will only start to fall apart in about two more posts when we start getting into

I'm being a bit pedantic on purpose obviously, I understand how they *feel* like very different types of games, and there's a whole thing about how we should define genres around experience instead of camera and mechanics that I agree with. Let's not get into it too deeply :')

The portal gun shoots projectiles at targets, like how you do in any other shooter.
A camera captures a wide area of the screen, which is not something you ever do in a shooter.

These are very different interactions.

All you can do is move and shoot.

Portal is a first person shooter - with puzzles.
CONTROL is a third person shooter - with puzzles.
INSIDE is a side-scrolling platformer - with puzzles.

All three are puzzle games, all three are not puzzle games.

🤷‍♂️

it's for sure something to do with the wacom driver, because I can bsod my pc just by restarting the driver from task manager, but every version of the driver reproduces the issue

Well then at least you will have made it and people will have played it, which is honestly two massive hurdles beat already 💪

It feels pretty incredible to see it click with someone though!

I'm legit thinking about going Linux on my home machine
November 22, 2025 at 12:19 PM
Idk about that but there's loads of indie devs who put their games in charity bundles and such when they're financially comfortable enough though
