Is this being driven by an incentive phase out/tax increase at the end of the year?

How exactly are they inhumane and immoral? I can understand them being unpleasant, upsetting, and certainly frustrating for the people affected, but inhumane and immoral seems like a reach.

Not necessarily. Out of Germany, Spain, Sweden, Britain, Italy, France, and Denmark, it's Denmark that has the lowest level of concern about immigration and ranking of it as an issue, despite - or more likely due - to the government's focus on it. yougov.co.uk/internationa...

Most say immigration over the past decade has been too high, and that their governments have mismanaged the issue

I'm not relying on my anecdotal experience, that was just to add some colour, although I am surprised at the number of people I've spoken to who care about immigration but wouldn't vote Reform.

Danish style reforms poll well, even with Greens, though this may change once they're more politicised.

Slightly more, probably 10k per year, but not a lot in the greater schemes of things.
November 21, 2025 at 7:08 PM
Are the reforms really inhumane? I agree that Labour's focus on immigration can make it more salient, but a considerable portion of the press isn't going to let up on the issue either.

Yes that's the gamble, and it's even more of a gamble in a FPTP system imo...I don't think it will pay off. 3/

Elections are won at the margins, the aim isn't to win Reform's base, it's to peel off voters who could swing either way but do care about issues like immigration - immigration is a top issue in polls. These people do exist, I've spoken to them, the gamble is on how many there are. 2/

Disagree, there's a left-right economic agenda, but that has increasingly shifted to benefits, safety nets, regulation, democratic oversight instead of public ownership. Of course there are exceptions too, populists pick and choose, and some parties make exceptions for their core voters. 1/

Yes, I think it would be more compelling if they kept the heating on, didn't dim lights, used the autobahn, and just stopped a little after halfway to top up for 10 minutes.
November 20, 2025 at 1:19 PM
The reforms even poll well with Green voters, although this may change as they become less abstract and more politicised.
November 19, 2025 at 4:31 PM
I disagree that they can always be outflanked, certainly there are some voters that will not be satisfied by it, or will not believe it's authentic from a centre-left party, but there are voters who are uncomfortable with immigration, but are not natural right wing voters.
November 19, 2025 at 4:30 PM
The counterfactual for the Social Democrats not adopting a more hardline approach to immigration is that DPP/DD may be polling much better and have done much better in 2019 & 2022.
November 19, 2025 at 4:29 PM
They're one of the few centre-left parties in Europe that are topping the polls and have some breathing room between them and the next party while also being an incumbent (not that that is a guarantee that they would be able to form a governing coalition).
November 19, 2025 at 9:12 AM
And yet that is still doing okay in the modern political environment.
November 19, 2025 at 8:43 AM
Modern politics, if they were still polling at 30% that would be a lot better than just okay.
November 18, 2025 at 11:31 PM
The effect of this would be to deny poorer countries the opportunity to buy cheaper forms of transport, don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
November 18, 2025 at 10:45 PM
They're polling okay
November 18, 2025 at 10:41 PM
It's not clear that is the case from the polling I've seen?
November 18, 2025 at 6:10 PM
Okay 👍
November 18, 2025 at 1:41 PM
Are you denying that there's an urban-rural difference when it comes to voting?

No place is a monolith, but there's definitely a shift in the balance.
November 18, 2025 at 1:37 PM
I think it's fairly evident that London votes differently than the UK does at the national level, though of course there will be other urban areas that are similar.
November 18, 2025 at 1:19 PM
I'm taking issue with the analogy/comparison, the Danish Social Democrats are polling okay nationally, which has been attributed - at least in part - to their stance on immigration.

Meanwhile, the Labour government's popularity has been hurt by other gaffes, like WFA, and general incompetence.
