The magnificent dead trees of Deadvlei contrast against a towering red dune, clothed in warm twilight that is so special in Namibia. A surreal, uniquely beautiful scene, so typical of this amazing country!

The deeply contorted lands of Namibia give rise to some truly unusual and otherworldly landscapes. This particular evening, fierce winds were blowing, and the combination of twilight and windblown dust blessed us with exceptional light, transforming these strange lands into the surreal.

The dunes in Namibia's Sossusvlei are all sand, except this one, and the beautiful interplay of the protruding rocks and textured sand comes to its full expression when clothed in dusk's soft, warm twilight.

The quality of light in Namibia is like none I have encountered anywhere else. It transforms Namibia's unique, at times surreal, landscapes into a world of dreams. A world of layers, punctuated by beautiful acacia trees, is painted in magical light which brings out the hidden, rich colors and textures of distant mountains.⁠

Autumn is a good season for sunset skies near Pismo Beach, CA. I was lucky to catch this on an evening hike — another time I’m glad to not stay home.

Is a vigorous hike worth chancing a glimpse above the clouds? Four years ago today, it was. Marine layers can occur at this time of year, but it’s hard to tell how thick they are until you’ve climbed above them. What an evening at Pismo Preserve, California. #photography #landscape #nature #sunset

I went out for some long-exposure shots of night sky at Minaret Summit, near Mammoth Lakes, CA. But clouds drifted in and it seemed my chance was ruined. Still I wondered … what if? Abandoning my plan I captured some mixed shots of both stars and moonlit clouds. #photography #nature #staycurious

Sometimes staying home is too easy. Late last night I left the comfort of home to photograph a passing storm. I'd never shot lightning at night, and the hands-on experience was illuminating. So glad that I added another “first” to my life. #photography #getoutside

As I learn to take better portraits photos, I've started reviewing old work. Came across this pic of a jumping spider who posed for me last January. I've also ordered new lights and rearranged my home studio to get better portraits of humans.

I was experimenting with manual controls on my Canon when, to my surprise, I caught the solar disc through the thickest part of a low-hanging cloud. The sun was otherwise hidden from view. Happy accidents like this are great reasons to get outside and experiment. #naturephotography #sunset

In May I bought an inexpensive Tiffen UV filter, more to protect my camera lens than deal with UV. Glad I did because this week I discovered a crack. The filter did its job and my main lens is fine, but I wonder if a better quality filter would have lasted longer.
