I wrote about the rapture that didn't happen, why we fantasize about the end of the world, and make the case for "Dynamite" by Taio Cruz being one of our great apocalyptic texts johnpaulbrammer.substack.com/p/dynamite-b...

Exploring an apocalyptic text after a non-Rapture

I wasn't aware that the TikTok Christian Rapture stuff last week stemmed from someone who claimed to have been visited by Jesus in a Kroger parking lot. I think I'm rededicating myself to the American Revelations in Parking Lots beat.

This whole piece is so good, but this part just punched me in the feels. Way too familiar. 🫠
I believe I will fail. My belief in inevitable failure disappoints me-this belief is surely one of those self-fulfilling prophecies-this belief is indicative of my big problem—my big problem is that I'm too aware-I'm aware that I'm too aware
—my awareness of my hyper-awareness only inflames my symptoms, which means I'm only going to get worse as time-Stop it. Cut that out!
Snip it with brain-scissors.

I mean, go read the whole thing, but this part in particular hit me like a sack of bricks
Excerpt: "In the horror movie trope, the child draws an entity only they can see. The drawing is scary to us because it implies something unseen. But to the haunted child, the act may very well be soothing. It’s why the monster in the movie is at its scariest in Act I, before it discloses that it’s an actor in a costume, or that it was meticulously rendered on a computer. When things take on a shape, they can be understood."

❤️❤️ in keeping with the "horror movie trope" in the piece, it was weirdly easy to write 😅
I think this may be my favorite thing you’ve written. I keep coming back to it and rereading chunks of it to understand my own upbringing better (also raised Catholic, awkward socially, had magical thinking anxiety rituals, etc). It really resonates; it must have been difficult to write. Thank you 💗

J.P. Brammer, whose name my Swedish autocorrect keeps trying to change to Bränner, might be our best contemporary essayist. He is definitely my favorite, and this piece is superb!

"Ritual plays a major role in the life of an anxious person. The poor creature is ruled by a fate obvious only to themselves."

Will be thinking about this for a long time:
