Again, I’m not crapping on Swift — she’s talented and people like her. I do take issue when she presents herself as something that she isn’t, and when a fandom doggedly rejects any kind of criticism of an artist. And I also don’t view sales figures as an indicator of artistry.

Business acumen is apparent in spectacle. It’s collector’s editions of albums. It’s friendship bracelets evoking childhood. Some songs are catchy, but it’s the experience — a theme park ride.

And an artist’s legacy extends beyond fans. I don’t have to like The Beatles to understand their legacy.

Neither of these things are bad. And Taylor Swift is absolutely the defining star of our time. She’s a billionaire who evokes childish nostalgia through the lens of capitalism.

Whether you like her or hate her, there are two truths about Taylor Swift:

1) She was never the artsy drama kid or the misunderstood outcast. She is and always was the rich popular girl.

2) Her defining legacy as an artist isn’t her music but her business acumen. Period.

The coolest thing about the Immortalverse vampires is that they all have these incredible manicures after they get turned. Between that and the blue contacts, I’m pretty sure I made out with one of the undead at Woody’s in 2004.
